Energy Analyst

The National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT) is seeking an engineer to perform field energy assessments. This is a regular, full-time, entry-level position providing an excellent opportunity to work with a dedicated and professional staff on state and national projects while developing skills as an energy analyst. If you are interested in putting your education to work and helping conserve energy this is the job for you. Would you like to work with building, industrial, and agricultural energy systems (lighting, HVAC, motors, pumps and blowers) to save energy? This is your opportunity to do so while getting paid and developing new skills. The position will be based at NCAT's headquarters in Butte, Montana. NCAT is a private non-profit organization that works to foster and promote sustainable technologies and systems, especially for the benefit of economically disadvantaged individuals and communities.

Energy Analyst

Qualifications

Minimum requirements include basic engineering skills and experience with energy systems. A college degree is required. A degree in mechanical, electrical or industrial engineering, or a related field is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

The successful candidate will have a strong interest in building technologies and learning how to perform commercial and industrial energy assessments. A demonstrated interest and knowledge in promoting energy efficiency is required. Experience in energy systems, computer spreadsheets, computer energy performance simulation is desired. A background in field energy assessments including work with electrical systems, motors, pumps and blowers would also be desirable. Excellent communication skills and the ability to learn quickly are very important in this position. A high level of computer literacy is required including use of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Travel is required.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts building and residential energy assessments
  • Performs energy analysis with energy performance software
  • Researches technical information on energy efficiency and sustainable building technology topics
  • Provides technical assistance in person and over the telephone to builders, building contractors, and property management officials on energy efficient building practices
  • Prepares and edits written descriptions, topical summaries, bibliographies, and other information materials suitable for giving presentations and posting to websites while targeting a variety of audiences of varying degrees of technical knowledge
  • Communicates via email, telephone, and in person to gather and disseminate information
  • Recommends engineering modifications to increase energy performance
  • May attend workshops, seminars, and related events in support of project duties

Salary and Benefits

$25,000 - $40,000 depending on qualifications and experience. Excellent benefits include paid vacation and holidays, health, life and disability insurance, a cafeteria and 401(k) plan and a pleasant, professional office environment.

Sustainable Agriculture Positions

Want to work with a dedicated and professional staff on national sustainable agriculture issues?

The National Center for Appropriate Technology is seeking qualified candidates for three full-time positions. The positions available are Livestock Specialist, Horticulture Specialist, and Organics Specialist. NCAT is interesting in identifying qualified candidates with education, experience and interest in sustainable and organic agriculture.

NCAT is a private nonprofit organization that champions small-scale, sustainable and local solutions to reduce poverty, protect communities and promote natural resources. Since 1976, NCAT has trained farmers about organic and sustainable practices, monitored energy use and demonstrated renewable technology.

Position

Livestock Specialist with a Background in Poultry or Hog Production

Salary Range

$28,000 to $40,000

A Livestock Specialist with a background in poultry and/or hogs will work directly with farmers to address their questions on livestock production and marketing. Minimum requirements include farm-based experience with a BS or MS degree in animal science, poultry science, pasture management, animal breeding and genetics or a related field. The qualified candidate must have a demonstrated interest and experience in sustainable practices as they relate to poultry and hog production and marketing.

Responsibilities

  • Work directly with farmers or farm groups to provide technical information on the sustainable or organic production and marketing of poultry and hogs
  • Provide information and support to farmers transitioning to organic production of poultry and hogs
  • Assist farmers with product marketing including providing information on farmers markets and local food systems

Position

Organics Specialist

Salary Range

$30,000 to $44,000

The Organic Specialist will work with farmers to provide information on how to produce organic crops and livestock. The specialist will help farmers through the difficult process of transitioning to organic production and certification. Candidates should have a BS or MS degree or equivalent in horticulture, animal science, pest management or soils management or a related field. An understanding and experience working with USDA organic regulations is required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide information and support to farmers on how to transition to organic production and certification
  • Help farmers develop marketing and business plans for sustainable and organic products
  • Help farmers identify value added products including marketing to farmers markets and/or local food systems

Position

Horticulture Specialist

Salary Range

$28,000 to $40,000

Horticulture Specialists work directly with farmers and ranchers to address their questions about sustainably raising and marketing tree fruits. Minimum requirements include a background and BS or MS degree in horticulture or a related field in agriculture. On-farm experience is a plus as is experience with organic production.

Responsibilities

  • Provide information directly to farmers and farm groups related to sustainable tree fruit production and integrated pest management
  • Help farmers transition to organic fruit production
  • Develop information and expertise on farmers markets and local food systems

Qualifications

NCAT values excellent communication skills as positions involve public speaking, writing and proposal development. All jobs may require specialists to prepare publications, topical summaries, bibliographies, workshop materials and website postings while targeting a variety of audiences of varying degrees of technical knowledge. Requirements may also include disseminating information to farmers via e-mail, telephone and in person and working with other sustainable agriculture specialists to identify farmer needs and appropriate delivery methods. Specialists may also assist in project development activities and attend conferences, workshops, seminars and related events in support of project duties. Internships

NCAT offers internship experiences for upper-level college and graduate students at many of its offices. Internships may take place during the school year or during the summer. Interns work alongside NCAT staff members, strengthening their skills by working with professionals in fields such as computer science, agricultural sciences, accounting, and energy efficiency. NCAT actively recruits interns from historically minority institutions, and the John Brown Minority Internship Fund supplements living expenses to make internships possible for minority students who are selected as interns. NCAT is currently looking for qualified students to work in our Fayetteville, AR, office. Interns will be given the opportunity to display and increase their video production, desktop publishing, editing, proofreading, research, Web and computer skills.

2010 Arkansas Summer Internship

Opportunities

  • Students with experience or expertise in agriculture, agronomy, horticulture, farm management, animal science, agribusiness, or marketing may be assigned to project duties in Arkansas that could include researching and writing technical material for use by farmers, ranchers or educators.
  • An intern with desktop publishing skills may be assigned to producing and formatting publications, brochures or other documents.
  • An intern interested in video production may be assigned to shoot footage of local farms, interview farmers or others involved with sustainable agriculture, or edit footage to create multimedia projects.
  • All interns will interact closely with professional NCAT staff and leave the experience with increased skills and a better understanding of the principles of sustainability.

Compensation

$8.00 per hour depending on experience. Students with work study eligibility will also be considered. An additional stipend for transportation and living costs may be available.

2010 Montana Energy Information Intern

The National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT) is a private non-profit corporation that works to promote sustainable technologies and systems, especially for the benefit of economically disadvantaged individuals and communities. NCAT is seeking a current student with an interest in renewable energy and energy efficiency to work part-time based in our Butte, Montana office as an Energy Program Intern. This is a wonderful opportunity for the right student to work on a national program under the direction of an experienced Energy and Agriculture Specialist. The student will be working on a number of projects focusing on renewable energy and energy efficiency. Full time summer work is also available.

2010 Montana Energy Information Intern

Responsibilities

Responsibilities for the position may include research, writing and editing information on renewable and sustainable technologies, helping develop a directory of energy alternatives, and managing updates to some of NCAT's websites. The intern will be working closely with an NCAT Energy Program Specialist on a number of projects and may do some work in the field performing energy audits.

Qualifications

The internship is available to a qualified currently enrolled college student. The successful candidate will need to have good written and verbal communication skills, an interest or background in sustainable technologies, excellent research skills and a high level of computer skills including proficiency in Word, Excel and PowerPoint. A science major is not required, but the student must have a strong science or professional technical communications background and an interest in sustainability. The successful applicant will also need to interact with the public and NCAT staff in a professional manner. The ability to work independently and to manage multiple tasks is required.

Compensation

$8.50/hr depending on experience. The position is part time and we are willing to work around your school schedule.
